Assembloid modeling of the impact of epilepsy on the cortex vs hippocampus

Epilepsy is most commonly associated with neural network hyperactivity and seizures, but its effects on the brain extend further, often impairing learning and memory. In our new study, we used cortical and hippocampal assembloids to investigate how variants in the SCN8A gene, which encodes the sodium channel Nav1.6, alter the formation and function of neural circuits across different brain regions, contributing to Developmental and Epileptic Encephalopathy 13. You can read more in our paper published in Cell Reports and in the UCLA press release summarizing our findings and their implications.  Congratulations to all team members who contributed to the project particularly Colin, Daniel and Ranmal!
